Final Essay ~ The effects of deforestation ~

We may not live another 100 years. (Hook) That is because forest is said that forest will be gone another 100 years. To store water, to make oxygen, to make the place to live and to grow food… all of these are thanks to forest. Like this, forest plays many important roles in our life. (Connection information) Cutting down forest means we trouble ourselves because forest and our life have a close relationship. I am going to refer to three effects; effects on living things, soil and water and the atmosphere. (Thesis statement)

First is effects on living things. Forest is the best place where wild animals live. Animals can hide from natural enemies and breed safely by building a nest. Without forest, it will be difficult to get food and weak animals cannot breed by natural enemies’ attack. So there are possibilities of extinction. (Decrease of animals) Animals decreasing, it is sure that our food decreases, too. If this becomes reality, even though population is getting larger, the shortage of food will get more serious. (Lack of food)

Second is effects on soil and water. Trees of forest are covering the mountain by sinking its roots in the ground and growing thick. This power of tree keeps solid in the mountain from crumbling. The ground in the forest is leaf mold piled by decayed leaves. Leaf mold has a property of absorbing water like a sponge and help flow out little by little. So deforestation becoming worse and trees decreasing, solid runs easily. In other words, this causes a mudslide. (Erosion of solid) If earth and sand flow into the river by a mudslide, creatures in the river cannot live. Moreover the lack of water is occurred because the river or spring water is gone and forest’s absorbing property disappears. (Damage to the source of the river)

Third is effects on the atmosphere. Forest absorbs Carbon Dioxide and emit Oxygen or clear air. Forest also takes in pollutant. Destroying forests means that the atmosphere is getting dirtier. (A further aggravation of air pollution) If forest that absorb CO2 and pollutant disappears, they will remain in the atmosphere. CO2 emission is increasing while forest is decreasing. CO2 covers the earth and shut out it from space, so extra infrared rays and heat accumulate in the atmosphere. This makes the climate warmer. (A further aggravation of global warming)

As I have referred, deforestation caused various serious problems such as effects on living things, soil and water or the atmosphere. Life on this planet will decrease, the cycle of nature will destroy and other environment problems will get worse. (Summarize the main points) However we need to cut the trees to live. So, it does not matter that we just stop cutting trees. At first, we should realize that we ourselves lead deforestation and begin what we can do to protect forest. (Opinion)
